Reiki & Energy Healing

WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is a form of alternative healing that focuses on energy transfer. It was developed in Japan in the late 1800s and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us, which is what causes us to be alive. A Reiki session aims to increase your life force energy, promoting healing, balance, and well-being.

HOW DOES REIKI WORK?

Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing. Through this method, a “universal energy” is transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the client. This process is intended to encourage emotional or physical healing.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A REIKI / ENERGY HEALING SESSION

  1. Setting: (In-Person) Reiki sessions are conducted in a peaceful, quiet setting. You will remain fully clothed, usually lying on a table or seated comfortably. Reiki sessions are also commonly performed distantly.
  2. Process: (In-Person) The practitioner places their hands lightly on or over specific areas of your head, limbs, and torso for a few minutes at each location. The hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body. Crystals, Tibetan Bowls and Crystal Bowls might be used based on preference of the client.

For distance sessions, the client schedules a time where they can be in a quiet setting, undisturbed (i.e. their home, office, etc.). The session can be held over Zoom or the practitioner can perform the session and contact the client once the distance session is complete. The practitioner may use a picture of the client and/or may use a surrogate (pillow, stuffed animal, etc.) in lieu of the client physically being there to perform the session.

Both ways in-person and distance are equally effective with respect to yielding results.
  3. Sensations: You may feel a warming sensation, a tingling, or nothing at all. Each person’s experience is unique.
  4. Duration: A typical session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

CONSIDERATIONS…

  • Reiki is not a substitute for medical treatment. It should be used as a complement to traditional therapy, not as a replacement.
  • There is limited scientific evidence supporting its efficacy, but many individuals report positive experiences.
  • Reiki is non-invasive and considered safe. It does not involve physical manipulation or the ingestion of substances.

ENERGY HEALING

An energy healer is someone who (like a Reiki Practitioner) practices energy healing, which is a form of alternative medicine that purports to manipulate the energy fields around the body to promote healing and well-being. The concept is based on the belief that the body is surrounded by an energy field (often called “aura” or “chi”) that can be influenced to promote healing. Here are some key aspects of what an energy healer does:

  1. Assessment: Energy healers often start by assessing the person’s energy field to identify imbalances or blockages that might be causing physical or emotional issues.
  2. Clearing Blockages: They use various techniques to remove or clear blockages in the energy field. This can involve hands-on practices (like in Reiki or therapeutic touch), where the healer places their hands on or near the body, or techniques that do not involve physical touch.
  3. Balancing Energy: Beyond just clearing blockages, energy healers aim to balance the energy in the body. This balance is believed to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
  4. Use of Tools and Symbols: Some practices involve the use of specific tools (like crystals, sound frequencies, or essential oils) or symbols (especially in Reiki) that are believed to enhance the healing process.
  5. Guidance: Energy healers may also offer guidance to help individuals understand their energy patterns and how these relate to their life experiences and challenges. They might provide advice on lifestyle changes, meditation, or mindfulness practices to support the healing process.
  6. Distance Healing: Some energy healing practices, like Reiki, claim to work over distances, meaning the healer and the recipient do not need to be in the same physical space for the healing to occur.
  7. Workshops and Training: Many energy healers also conduct workshops or training sessions to teach others about energy healing techniques and practices.

It’s important to note that the effectiveness of Reiki and energy healing is a subject of debate within the medical community, with skepticism often arising due to the lack of empirical evidence supporting its efficacy. However, many people report positive experiences and benefits from energy healing sessions, including reduced stress, improved emotional balance, and a greater sense of peace and well-being.
